Maddy's 2nd Birthday

By Sam:
We celabrated Maddy's 2nd Birthday earlier this August. The theme was rainbow. By looking at the decorations it isn't that hard to guess.

Here are pictures of the cake before, during, and after the party. It was hot out and the cake really melted. We put it downstairs but it still melted so fast that you could watch the frosting slowly running down the sides. The lit candles made it melt even more. At least we had before pictures to show the guests!

The cake was swirly rainbow inside. It looked very cool and was a very yummy vanilla-almond flavor.

The Birthday girl opening her gifts. She acctually loved opening and playing with the cards!

In Kentucky

By Sam:
We went to Kentucky for a day to see our other family.

We jumped on their trampoline,

played with cats,

caught, petted and chased chickens,

and fed a bunny. We had a lot of fun! With no injuries except a few tears in my skirt [due to climbing over barbwire to catch some runaway chickens] our day went very well. All us kids fell asleep on the two-hour ride back to TN. We had to be ready for the  adventures the next few days would bring!

KONOS Honor: Tabernacle Week 2

Our 2nd Week learning about honoring God through studying the tabernacle put discovery learning into action.  The kids put together their very own "tabernacle" using whatever household items they could think of and find and putting their knowledge of the tabernacle to use.  I think they did an awesome job!  They got a general layout figured out first and then started with the courtyard.  Here is the bronze altar complete with offerings

The bronze laver or water basin for the priests to purify themselves before entering the tabernacle.

 The courtyard as a whole.

Now we have entered the tabernacle.  Here is the altar of incense.

The Golden Lampstand "burning" brightly just as Christ lights our way in this dark world to everlasting life with Him!

The kids' favorite (involving water & "showbread" aka tortillas): The Showbread Table.

The Most Holy Place or Holy of Holies where God's presence dwelt.  Here is the veil separating the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place.

The Ark of the Covenant.  the coloring on the box has nothing to do with the Holy of Holies but is actually the control panel for our "spaceship" on our big cardboard box that we used for our Orderliness unit on the Solar System.  The stuffed animals are the golden "cherubim".

The veil separating the Courtyard from the Holy Place.

The Most Holy Place as a whole.

We also made High Priest Miters or Turbans and Breastplates.  Here our 2 priests ready to serve their Lord.  They along with the others reenacted receiving offerings from the "Israelites" and sacrificing them on the altar as well as the other duties of the priests.

We also (each family separately) built edible tabernacles which of course the kids loved - it involved candy!

Who knew learning could be so fun and character enriching and draw you closer to your Lord and Savior by seeing His purpose for the tabernacle and His great love for His people!!

KONOS: Honor - Tabernacle Wk 1

We really enjoyed learning about the tabernacle and I learned so much and it opened up so much more meaning to other parts of the Bible and it gave our kids a clearer picture of the purpose of all those Israelite offerings and sacrifices and how it all points to the greatest sacrifice of Jesus on the cross and how he has taken away all of our sins so that we can be in heaven with Him!  God certainly deserves honor from us!  It was a wonderful unit and I highly recommend it!

After Christmas we started co-oping with another family for our KONOS units and we meet once a week every other week.  So, this was our first unit that we co-oped together on and it worked out really well!  We made oil lamps out of clay and yarn for wicks and tested different kinds of oil to discover which ones worked the best for lamps and learned a little history about olive oil since that is what the Israelites would have used.  We learned about different spices (and ground them with a mortar and pestle) that would have been used in the Israelite offerings and incense and we lit some incense sticks to see how they smelled.  And to cap it off we made some showbread which the kids thought was delicious!
